This is the final part of Unit 1A

This Part of the Unit is focused on the Properties of Matter

Physical Properties vs. Chemical Properties

Physical Properties

-->Can be observed or measured without altering the identity of a material
-->Such as:
- Color
- Natural Odor
- Density
- Melting Point
- Boiling Point
-->Physical properties may be extensive or intensive
Extensive: dependent on amount of matter present (typically measurements)
Intensive: independent on amount of matter present (DENSITY IS INTENSIVE)

Chemical Properties

-->Describe the ability to undergo change that transforms it into new and different substances
-->Such as:
- Decomposes when exposed to light
- Oxidizes upon heating
- Supports Combustion
- Ability to Rust

Physical Change

-->Any change in matter that does not result in a change in identity
- Boil
- Boil
- Freeze
- Dissolve
- Condense
- Break
- Split
- Crack
- Grind
- Cut
- Crush
- Bend
- Can include a temperature change ( PHASE CHANGES are always physical)

Chemical Change

-->The ability of a substance to undergo a change that alters its identity
- Burn
- Ferment
- Rot
- Rust
- Explode
- Corode
-->any change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances with different characteristic properties

Reactant+Reactant = Product

- Reactants: Substance(s) that undergo a chemical reaction (The starting substances in a chemical reaction
- Iron + Oxygen (Reactants) → Iron Oxide (Rust)
- Products: Substance(s) that are created during a chemical reaction
- Iron + Oxygen → Iron Oxide (Product)
-->Indicators of a chemical reaction
- Release or absorb light or heat energy
- Ferment
- Production of a gas
- Formation of a precipitate
- Unexpected color changes
- Production of an odor
- pH change
